"...the vivacity and sheer excitement of these young, committed performers [blow] layers of respectful dust off their Baroque repertoire..." Musical Opinion, July/Aug 2010

Welcome to the homepage of Solomon's Knot

Solomon's Knot is a "collective" of musicians and musical enthusiasts united by their interest in the music of the Baroque. Unlike many ensembles, we don't have a single artistic leader or top-down structure. Impulses, ideas and leadership come from all round the group and any one of us can be the driving force behind a particular project or programme.

The Collective

Jonathan Sells

I founded Solomon's Knot back in 2008.  It started off as the Solomon Choir and Orchestra, and was later joined by the small-scale Solomon Consort.  Now we're fully flexible, and can perform in any configuration we want. My founding inspiration was to get away from all the tired old performances of so-called 'early music' which even the performers bore themselves with.  Our vision is of a group of people who perform this wonderful music because they WANT to, and not for any other reason. When not working with Solomon I'm an opera singer based in Zurich.

James Halliday

I joined SK in 2010. I have always been fascinated by the French Baroque and so joining the ensemble provided me with a great opportunity to construct a programme of music around the fabled Cardinal Mazarin.

Jonny and I have been friends since University, where we shared many formative musical experiences as part of groups like the Cambridge Consort and the Cambridge University Baroque Ensemble (which Jonny co-founded) and the Sagittarian Consort (which I co-founded). When Jonny decided that he wanted to start a new venture out in the wilds of London, I was always going to want to join in. My particular interest, as far as running the group is concerned, is in PR and marketing - but I also work extensively on programming, aided by my monstrous CD collection acquired over a period of two years spent working for the harmonia mundi record label.

Caro Barnfield

I moved to the UK five years ago to work for Aldeburgh Music, where I ran everything vocal and baroque at the Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme - a culmination of most things I am passionate about: baroque music (Handel!!), singing and high-end music education. Nowadays I work for the L.S.O. and love keeping the connection to all those things I love through Solomon's Knot, where I help out with the general management.
